The human body?makes proteins known as antibodies when we become infected by a foreign body, like bacteria. Each antibody binds to a very specific part of the surface of the foreign body that we call the antigen – different antibodies bind to different antigens. We can artificially generate antibodies to target antigens on molecules we’re interested in studying to understand where they are located within a cell or tissue sample.
At Abcam our main focus is providing antibodies intended for basic research – that is, those typically used in academic pharma and biotech laboratories to investigate fundamental scientific questions. More recently we have started to broaden our offering as a development and a supply partner in the diagnostics market.
In vitro diagnostic (IVD) antibodies
IVDs are tools typically used in a clinical setting, such as a hospital or medical institute lab, to help diagnose a particular disease or condition. These antibody-based tools are used on patient samples (such a blood, urine, or tissue) and help clinicians to diagnose or assess the progression of a disease. IVDs can also provide information on the type of treatment to use and provide information on disease prognosis.

Kits contain everything a researcher needs to run an experiment: the reagents and protocol are provided and the contents have been optimized for maximum performance. A researcher provides the sample of interest and the kit delivers everything else.

Agonists, antagonists, activators, and inhibitors
Our agonists, antagonists, activators, and inhibitors (AAAI) range includes hundreds of different molecules that change how other proteins normally function. Most of the work carried out in a cell is done by proteins: they form pumps to move chemicals in and out of the cell; act as chaperones to escort other molecules around the cell; and serve as intermediates chains of proteins that transmit signals between or within cells.
By switching a protein on or off, scientists can begin to understand how a protein works within a more complicated signalling pathway. Our AAAI products provide the tools necessary make these changes to investigate how proteins behave.
Proteins and peptides
Proteins and peptides are the molecules that carry out almost all of the actions within and between cells. These include things like cytokines that can initiate an immune response, growth factors that help scientist culture cells in the lab, or enzymes that catalyses reactions. Scientists use these proteins and peptides as part of more complex experiments to test how cells and organisms function.
